Horizontal waterfall chart

The waterfall chart is often used by strategy consultants at companies like McKinsey to show the sources of change behind two values. It can be tricky to create in PowerPoint. This slide is a template for a waterfall chart in PowerPoint.

It is a manual version though. I have set up everything as good as I could, with different colours for totals, ups, and downs. Still, you need to do some manual calculations to make it fit to your specific situation. Also, data labels are added manually.

An automated version of the waterfall chart is still work in progress.

You can read about the approach to making waterfall charts in PowerPoint (or Excel) in this earlier blog post. It also possible to use Excel itself to create waterfalls (see the Microsoft support site). But, this does not work on a Mac, and the formatting is "very Excel" is unlikely to fit your corporate template.

This layout is available as either a PowerPoint or Keynote template.

Here is the short version of the user license that go with our templates:

  • You are free to do whatever you want with the template, and use it in any document you see fit
  • 5 users can use a template you download, if you work with bigger teams, please contact us
  • You cannot sell any of the material you download on this site unmodified, i.e., run a competing template business
  • Consultants and service providers: please purchase a new license for each new client that makes use of the slides. Best is to have your client buy the slide license, they can then continue to use it after the project is finished.
